Great Advancements in Technology:
Really cool small little bendy display screens, and textiles that emit light!

For those of you that have too much money than you know what to do with, ever think about owning your very own Transformers costume?
Who exactly ARE the people on the Town Lake hike and bike trail at 2PM on a Tuesday? Bored Westlake housewives? Athletes? Students? Transients that can afford coordinated Nike running ensembles? Can we assume they're people without regular day job employment?
Bonus Town Lake hike and bike trail sighting: I swear to G*d that we passed a walker with the narstiest syphilitic (?) hacking cough.
Home Slice in Austin = NOT open on Tuesdays! Don't repeat my mistake, peoples.

That's from a new Teacher's Union ad campaign designed to alert the public at large of the gang violence in Newark, New Jersey. People are understandably getting upset- these ads are everywhere- they fear the campaign is hurting Newark business. I'm kind of never wanting to leave the Newark airport the next time that I have a layover there (not that I ever had a desire to venture into Newark proper regardless)...
Let are kids walk! Love that Texas public school system...
Now that virtually all of the television season finales aired (with the notable exception of Entourage), TV viewers have hokey new reality and game shows to look forward to in the coming months. The summer, as you may recall, unleashed upon the unsuspecting populace both American Idol AND Dog Eat Dog. Summer '07 doesn't look to disappoint, either!
Of particular note is NBC's new dating reality show Age of Love, which pits 26 women in their 20s and 40s against one another in a race to win the heart of tennis "star" Mark Philippoussis. The younger women are apparently referred to as "kittens," and the older women as "cougars." How's that for feminism in the 21st century?
NBC is touting it as part of their "Summer of Love" lineup. More like, "Summer of the Coug!"

"let are kids walk" wow.
Most people in the city who are familiar with both the union and Mr. Del Grosso know that it's a shell game. The new mayor and council have started a whole series of public safety programs to combat crime since they assumed office last summer. And compared to the same time last year, crime is actually down. I live downtown, and it's quite safe. In many ways, people who "know" about Newark have no idea what they are talking about. Crime needs to go down more, of course, but it is concentrated in just a few high-activity areas, not an all out war zone like so many think.
This is the real reason for the signs: the Newark Teachers' Union and their president Del Grosso want to shame the mayor and council because Mayor Booker supports charter schools and school choice, which the union opposes deeply. He also wants to return the schools to mayoral control (right now Newark public schools are run by the state). With an abysmal graduation rate of 39%, you would think that the union would appreciate the need for change, but it has taken an relentlessly confrontational stance against anything the mayor does.
If this is supposed to help stop the violence, why don't the billboards list any resources or useful information? Arguably the union could have done more to combat violence by sponsoring after-school programs with the tens of thousands of UNION DUES dollars it is spending on this alarmist campaign of intimidation. Furthermore, Joseph Del Grosso hasn't even lived or taught in Newark for over 20 years. He lives in Nutley, a suburb who's latest claim to fame is being the subject of a lawsuit for not allowing blacks and Latinos into the city pool. Can he really be trusted to speak in the best interest of Newarkers? All my neighbors are furious about this.
I don't think the mayor is perfect, but he is in the right on this one. He works extremely hard and I see him and other city officials everywhere trying to get a handle on what people are thinking, and encouraging Newarkers to take responsibility in taking back their neighbrhoods. The new police director is doing a huge amount of work on decreasing crime, and this slime campaign is utterly useless and exploits the victims of violent crime for a political ploy!
A. You need to change the focus of your blog to issues related to Newark. Austin is so Spring Semester.
B. Can I talk about the subway? As in major fashion dont's I see every day on the train. Sorry ladies, but most of them fall on you.
1. Pants that are 4 to 6 sizes too small. Where in the Hispanic and African community did someone decide that it was sexy to muffin-top? Sure, white girls are sometimes guilty too, but they are just plain sloppy. The African and Hispanic ladies wear them with purpose!
2. Women with breasts the size of toddlers that don’t wear bras. Just because the tank-top says “built in bra” doesn’t mean that it can hold 50 pounds of boob meat.
3. Guys in homemade sleeveless tee shirts. Fellas, in case you didn’t know, the gym has this thing called a locker room where you can change out of your workout clothes. Also, Andrew Dice Clay wants his outfit back.
4. Strapless tops with non-strapless bras. I swear I have seen a half dozen women like this already. Ok maybe a strapless top with a tank top under neath is ok. A little 80’s retro look is cool. But this is an all out BRA.
5. Sunglasses under ground. Ok, what the hell is this? Why do some women wear those huge chemistry goggle sunglasses on the train? It doesn’t make you look swank or mysterious. The only mystery is whether or not there is a person behind those manhole sized glasses. Honestly, theses sunglasses are getting so big that they could double as welding masks.
